How digital media changed journalism

Before digital media

"journalism organizations often choose either to pander to people by giving them news they think they want, or patronize them by providing news the organizations think audiences need." (Kolodzy, 2019) Media today msube factual and conscious of the audience they serve. Then media must observe the old, 'who, what, when, where and why' elements. What is needed for any news story no matter how it is disseminated is convergence journalism:

      • Is it newsworthy
      • Get the facts
      • Focus- what is the thinking of the news item?
      • Verify sources
      • Clarity, choosing the best way to present story
      • Provide answers
      • Determine how to reach audience
      • Remain ethical

The benefits of new digital tools like blogs, social media and video allow the public to become part of the news process. "The increasing popularity of social media platforms creates new digital social networks in which individuals can interact and share information, news, and opinion." (Housley et al, *2018)

Pay attention to the words, the visuals and tell a story. Journalists must accomplish all of this and fast. Where as at one time, a journalists would take the information back and spend time writing it, now it often is done on the spot.
